Blog Post #4: What is the True Meaning of Justice? Monday, Sep 22 2008
Uncategorized 3:45 pm
I feel that justice is getting what you deserve for what you did.I feel as though it should be an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth.I feel as though if you kill somebody for no reason than you should get the maximum penalty. This way it would limit peoples thought on doing dumb stuff such as killing people for unjust reasons.I think rapest should be really get the maximum penalty. I mean someones family has to suffer because you decide do something stupid. I believe your family should have to suffer as well. If there stricter penalties on murders than it would probably cut down on the amount of murders that we have in society today. Rapest should be put in prison for life with someone whos going to rape them everyday. The system is to focus on drugs, if people want to to use drugs thats their problem. They should be the ones penaliesed not the poeple who are selling. Their just trying to support themselves.
I love the idea of justice. i think the it originally comes from the idea of cause and effect. When we are first born, our parents teach us right from wrong by punishing us when we do wrong and rewarding us when we do right. Therefore we are used to and comfortable with the idea of being punished for wrong doings. So, when we have a wrong done to us, we feel the need for someone or something to be punished. I feel that justice is a synonym for comfort. I don’t think that justice is actually ‘”an eye for an eye” because one persons wrong isn’t he same as another wrong done to them. For example I don’t think that capital punishment is right. Although it may be considered justice to those who have lost their innocent loved one, their idea of justice comes from the idea that the person who killed their loved one payed. But the truth of the matter is, killing an innocent person and killing a murderer is not equal, no matter how you try to look at it. I feel that people tend to confuse justice with fairness when justice is something that anyone can get for themselves. An example of this is when people try to take “justice” into their own hands. Killing the person that killed your brother is not right, but it may bring a sense of justice to you because he is dead. Justice is just something we strive for, not something that we should automatically expect to recieve from every situation.
Justice can be defined in many different ways. In my opinion, sometimes people, judges, and policemen do not always make the right decisions. There are many criminals and ex-criminals walking the streets today. For example, rapists, I think they should serve more time in jail than they usually do because who knows who they might harm next. When I use to get a news paper I would be nervous to see that I could be staying in the same area that a rapist stays in. I also hate when murders are set free due to bail or because of someone’s testimony. Sometimes I wish that a witness wasn’t needed when determining whether a person was guilty or not. My reason is because the witness could be intimidated or scared to testify against that person and they could end up lying if they knew who the person was. if they lie, then that person is a free man and could end up harming the next person. Another problem I have with justice is police brutality. There are many police officers that are corrupt. They are supposed to be here to protect us but they are the ones who be harassing people and racial profiling. There are also many police officers who abuse people. The only thing that happens to them if they get caught is suspension, fired, or counseling. If it was a normal person they would have to serve time in the state jail facility. I wonder why the same actions don’t take place for both people. When people do wrong they should be punished equal and fair.
Justice is many different things to me. Justice is a law, its commands, and it is also what people want out of life. People expecty justice to be served in society. We depend on the polie, lawyers, and judges to carry out laws. When a person feels unjust it makes them worry about the law in it self. some people feel that people don’t receive the same justice as others because of the color of their skin, their ethnicity or their gender. Like for instance, some people feel like the law is lenient on wealthy or that a poor person has to fight harder for justice. Justice should be distribued equally throughout society. No one in the court room or in a community should be biased because they don’t agree with someone’s nature. Everyone should have equal opportunities.Justice is a law that we beleive that we can receive no matter what the situation. In court rooms, sometimes convicted felons don’t receive the same respect as a person with a clean record. I feel that if a person has paid their debt to society, they should have another chance to prove themselves. In juatsice, sometimes people do not always make the right decisions. For instance a person might receive life in prison because one juror does not understand the case or sometimes the eveidence is not accurate or sometimes a witness does not show up for court. Also people lie in court just so that a person can go free. Sometimes people are just in the wrong place at the wrong. Poeople should sbe treated fairly. Justice should not be inefficient.
I believe that the definition of justice depends on the situation and people involved. However, I believe that the overall meaning of justice is universal fairness and equality. Justice promotes peace and well-being. I automatically think of the court system with a judge and a gavel when I hear the word justice. However, many times our courts and laws fail to provide justice, although it is their primary duty. There is so much crime today that goes unpunished and as a result many innocent lives suffer. The world was able to see a great example of injustice during Hurricane Katrina. The world witnessed first-hand how people are treated unequally even in the 21st century. The corruption of New Orleans and the government’s unjust way of handling the chaos made many people realize that there is still need for great change. In very few cases, justice is served. Sadly, very few people expect fairness out of harsh situations. “Whoever said life was fair,” is a well-known motto that we are told to ease the pain we face because of injustice. Justice not only brings peace, but it also deals with respect and understanding. I think ignorance has a lot to do with injustice. People are unable to respect differences in other cultures, religions, and ways of thinking. So often times ignorant people hurt others who are different from them. Justice ensures that everyone is responsible for their actions and pays the consequence. However, justice is something we can only hope to receive.
I believe the meaning of justice is fairness. To get what one deserves is justice. Without justice in the world, people would get the feeling of violation. When someone robs a store, it would be just for him to be arrested for the crime he just commited. Justice is non-partial. It sees no race, size, popularity, or monetary value. When a celebrity commits a crime, it is only just that they are held responsible for their actions. Justice was served when Paris Hilton was arrested for driving while intoxicated. She should not be an exception because of her celebrity status and her monetary value. Justice keeps the peace, and keeps the community in order. Without justice, there would be a lot more violence and crimes commited daily. Justice is based on the moral values of society. Morals are what one should be taught at a young age. My parents taught me that lying is not a good thing to do.They also taught me to be respectful to others. If I listen to what my parents tell me is right and wrong, I will always be morally right. If people stay in the guidelines of what’s morally correct, the world would be a better place. The problem with the world today, is that people are disrespectful to each others’ values and customs. Justice makes sure that people think twice about their disrespectful actions, because they will pay the consequence. Justice isn’t everywhere in the world. In some countries, there is no middle class of people. This is unjust because they work hard, and are still dealing with poverty and starving children.
According to Wikipedia justice is the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, fairness and equity. A conception of justice is one of the key features of society. When I see this question it seems as if you are asking me, so I will tell you my opinion. They say it has to do with moral rightness is moral rightness the idea of a person being penalized because of an obligation they had to fulfill. One day month of August year of 2005 a middle aged woman was asked to stay back for a natural disaster because it was her job. Eventually the expected disaster happened and left her stuck at her job. Her family to stay back because that was there mother of course they would not leave her in a situation like that by herself. The head boss left the lower workers there to stay with no clue while he went off to a better places and to top it off the workers were not really allowed to bring there families there. Then the family meet up and found an abandoned boat to use to get away (mind you she had to stay back for work). The family witnessed many different types of situations. The family finally came to there destination and were meet very rudely. They had to sit in the hot sun with no food and no water for something as simple as getting fired could have prevented not! Who really would give up there job especially if they need it? They were not told where they were going basically not allowed to speak. Eventually they forced someone to tell them and when they found out they realized it was where one daughter stayed at and in order for them to be released they must have proof of identification lets say like show them a picture of the person of them together. Is that a part of justice? Do that represent moral Rightness? NOT
To me, there is no true meaning to justice and no correct way to administer it. Many people tend to live by the “eye for eye” concept, but how can one determine if that justice was carried out fairly. For instance, if a craftsman cut off an interpreter’s hands, it’s not entirely right to cut off the craftsman’s hand, since he provides a living for himself or for his family with those hands. To my perspective, that method is not really fair, regardless of the deed that he/she committed. Just like life, it has many different views and the only person who can determine “true” justice is god himself. For example, if a man robs a bank because he needs money to pay for his dying child’s hospital bill and gets caught, is it right that he serves a four or five year sentence? His actions were for the good of his child, which is supposedly the duty of a good father. Unfortunately, in our society, laws can not be bent for a father, mother, sister, brother, etc. This good hearted father will still continue to serve that sentence and by the time he leaves, his daughter might have already past away. Therefore, there is no such thing as true justice in human form, because it might be fair on one end of the spectrum but different on the other. In addition, we often make mistakes when deciding the right justice for a person. As a result, we can not determine of the action was “true justice”.
When I think of justice, I think of fairness. Justice is the ability to be fair, but I do not believe that everything is fair. In fact I know that everything is not fair. The word fair does not seem fair to me. I think of fairness as equality and being the same. However, fairness is really placing everyone on the same playing, which means giving people the tools necessary to be equal to others. I know it’s confusing. I’m still trying to grasp this concept of fairness but anyways. We, the US, has a justice system which attempts to be fair, but there are always exceptions. People who commit the same crime do not receive the same punishment. A person who commits a homicide in one state may receive life, while another person receives fifteen years in prison. I’ve always wondered why this is so. I understand that some criminal give away information in order to receive a lighter sentence, but this does not seem fair to me. I believe if you were bold enough to commit a crime, then you should suffer the full repercussions from this crime. However, that is just my opinion. Actually, I don’t believe that we should have a justice system. We were not placed on this earth to judge what is just and unjust, so how can we grant ourselves these powers. I believe that our justice system is so flawed because we try to decide fair punishments for criminals, but we really don’t know what a fair and just punishment is. I guess I don’t believe in a true justice. I believe fairness is justice, but I don’t believe in a true justice.
Justice is a major component to he freedom and equality we have in America. Justice is fairness and equality no matter your race or ethnicity or your gender. I don’t believe true justice is obtainable however. Our legal system is manmade therefore will never be perfect. While “justice for all” can be desired, it will never be obtained in my opinion. Because it is ran by men, the feelings and thoughts and even the prejudices of man play a role in the amount of justice given to people. We may come close to creating a perfect system where justice is reached, but we can not be perfect in all of our attempts.
What is the true meaning of justice? I don’t believe there is a true meaning for the word justice. Justice is based on human being’s personal beliefs on what if fair. Who are we to determine what is right and what is wrong? Each of us has our own set beliefs and values. Because of this, we as people are to differentiate between right and wrong. Yet, we need a system to help sort out the people who take this message the wrong way. Someone may think killing another for revenge is just, but in reality it is not. Abortion is an injustice because the mother kills her baby without thinking about the good of the child. Yet because of social expectations, women are pressured to have an abortion. Justice is supposed to mean fairness, but justice is not carried out fairly sometimes. For example, if a man commit’s a crime that causes him to go to jail for a number of years, but his intention was to help his family would that be just? What if his family was in danger of dying? If that was the case, he had no choice but to risk going to jail to help his family. The word justice has a different meaning for every person, but it is up to every individual to find out the meaning for themselves. A meaning of justice that will make sense to them so that it will make it easier to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong.
I believe that the best definition of justice is equal punishment for the wrongdoings that have been committed. Basically if someone does something wrong to someone or just does something wrong in general and they are caught, their punishment should be just as bad, as or worse than the actions that the person may have used in their wrongdoing. For example, If someone kills another person intentionally while they were in their right mind, and get caught doing it, or it can be proved without a doubt, I believe that they should either be killed, or end life as they know it by being trapped in a cell for the rest of their lives. Justice in general is just a good feeling, because things are fairer after justice has been served. Without regards to criminal intent, justice can still be interpreted the same way. When someone, or a group of people or peoples feel that they have been wronged in any way, including socially and economically, justice would include the actions taken by the government who would make the wrongs right. Justice is used to gain equality because when people feel that they have been demeaned, they want to get even with the person or persons that they are now feeling inferior to. Justice can be used to describe almost any situation in which a person who had been wrong earns some kind of reparations. All in all I do not think there is such a thing as true or perfect justice because in the end some “bad guys” still get away with their actions.
What is the true meaning of justice? According to the dictionary justice is the quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness. To me, I think there is no true meaning of the term justice. When I think of the word justice I think about equality and fairness in which I strongly think we lack in today’s society. For example: how people (blacks in general) are criticized and being judged upon the color of there skin. Where’s the justice in that? How men and women work within a work place working the same position, and the man gets paid more. Who came up with the idea of the glass ceiling? Tell me what’s the justice in that? My point is that why should we have a justice system and not use it. “The corruption of New Orleans and the government’s unjust way of handling the chaos made many people realize that there is still need for great change. In very few cases, justice is served. Sadly, very few people expect fairness out of harsh situations.”(janae324)I strongly agree with her statement that justice is rarely served. In harsh situations one really can’t blame another for expecting the unfair and unjust treatment because of what goes on in society today.
Justice to me is a term that cannot really be defined. Of course there is the Webster dictionary version but how is what that definition taken into society? Many people take justice as what the government is supposed to do, taking care of the elder and the disable. And others take justice as something that needs to be handled in their own hands. People also take justice as someone going to jail for what they did and some take justice as what took their love one away for no apparent reason but because of false accusations. People also might believe that justice is our freedom, our equality or what we need and want, if we strive for it or it is given to us by the government or by are family members. Whose too say what justice is, but to me justice is what I was taught as right and wrong. To me justice is that of helping the needy, striving to become better and knowing that my actions good or bad can either hurt someone or make them a better person. I believe that only we can follow what is right and what is wrong. I also feel that the only way we can be just people is by our actions. That the actions our parents taught us must be taken in and followed. We could also teach what they taught us to our kids, and those younger than us. I also feel that now justice needs to be taken as an important part of society and needs to be taught to the kids.
“What is the True meaning of Justice?” I personally do not believe in a “true meaning” of justice. The dictionary defines justice as the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments and the administration of law ; especially : the establishment or determination of rights according to the rules of law or equity. There are many different situations in which justice can have a different meaning. Many people also have their own definition of justice. I think justice is situational. Many times, justice is decided on our norms. So if our society decides that something is not right or normal, does that mean it is not just? Different people have their own values and morals. Therefore justice should not be defined on just one factor. Everyone has different beliefs. For example, to different cultures, it would be just to be punished and hit for doing wrong. However, in other cultures it would be consider an abuse. Even though I do not have my own definition for the true meaning of justice, I do agree with what the dictionary defines to be the meaning of justice. I agree that the law has a big weight on determining true justice. But even though laws are supposed to make us just, in our days it seems as if the richer and famous get away with what they want when they want. So how then, can we have a just society if our government is unjust?
The true meaning of justice is base on civil laws. For every action, there is a consequence. Laws are issue to keep us from harming another person. If he/she convicted a murder, he/she will get the consequences he/she deserves. When someone commits murder, I think he/she should be put on death trial. I think it is the only way to repay the lost of someone’s relatives, friends, or siblings. When the situation is in the hands of justice, he/she should be put on dead trial. Not everything is about felony and violence. Sometimes people think the economy is unjust. These people are wrong. These people are probably lazy, uneducated, and liars. I think the economy is pretty fair. Not everyone is equal in this world we live in. People are where they are because they put fort effort and contribution to what they do for a living. The needy people think it is unfair and that the world should be in an equality state. This point is wrong. Most needy people do not work. They just sit home and wait for food stamp money. If the wealth is divided evenly, it would not be fair to people who work harder than people who don’t work at all. I believe in putting effort and contribution will make the world a better and just place. Instead of complaining about the gap between the wealthy and the poor, people should put fort more effort in what they do. If everyone puts in the same effort, he/she can be wealthy and equal.
In the society that we live in, justice is not its true meaning. Justice is defined as the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, fairness and equity. We have law and order, but there are still issues that still concerns us today. If the law is suppose to protect us in the city that we live in, then why do have such a high rate of crimes? There are still no progress in the city and the outcome of it has worsen over the years. Murders and drugs are the two main acts that occurs in our city. I do not think we have the “true” meaning of justice. People today still get away with crimes. And no justice is served. I wonder sometimes if it is because of our government. Maybe the government is corrupted. There are many questions I would wonder about why there are so many wrong doings in our city. There is no equality. Not everyone has the same equal rights. Many have better benefits then others in the society. Also there are people who are easily judge because of their background. WHY IS THAT? Sterotyping is always an issue in our society. Because of their racial background or class they are easily judged. Nonthing is fair in our society. It is a main issue and we need to make many changes for a better future. It seems as though the past is repeating itself in the present. Where issues of race, gender, and social backgrounds occured. Can there ever be justice?
If I were to define “justice” in my own words, I would say the judgement to punish those that need to be punished and reward those that need to be rewarded. These days the judge in court determines if the the subject is guilty or innocent. If it was a murder case, and the true murderer is judged as innocent, then there’s no justice in the court of law and order. The crime rates in the U.S. are high and most of the time the victim is hurt or has damaged property and the criminal flees from the crime scene. Is that justice? Can justice be only served in court? What if the witnesses are against you? What if there’s not enough evidence to convict the criminal? Is the judge being biased? Must everyone obey the laws of the court? I think sometimes it’s better to take matters into our own hands if the law cannot judge right from wrong. But then again, if you think about it, we will be the ones at fault too. We do not have the power to judge, the government does. We have only voice and the government has order.
What is justice to me? It’s one word that plays the role of fairness, equality, honesty, and much more. Having the freedom to practice my religion is justice to me. I could wear the Hijab(veil) in public without persecuted against law. Holidays could even be celebrated with joy whether it’s Ramadan, Christmas, or even Honokaa. Mosques and Churches are both available and open to those who want to worship God. Justice to me is not only the practice of religion it’s also being able to go to school with different ethnicities, not being separated because of my skin color. It’s being equal with other people who are humans just like me. Justice is riding on the bus sitting down where ever I would like to. It’s to be treated fairly. Justice takes care of those who are good to be rewarded and those who are bad deserve to be punished. Justice defines a persons personality by the way they treat others. Whether there good or bad it defines what justice is to them. Having the right to vote is justice to us citizens to chose our president. You don’t have to be a certain color just to vote its all race who are eligible to vote for whom they think will treat us humans justice. Freedom of speech is enabled to all class levels of citizens, not only to rich, average, or poor, to all. Dressing up, listening to music, and choosing our own friends as we please is a major justice to young adults.
Justice is hard to decipher. What may be considered justice for one person could be totally different for another. There are many different types of justice. There is the justice of the law that is not always so just, street justice, which is harsh and strict, and all across the world there are various types. But my definition of justice is something that people may or may not agree on. You can either hate or love it. I consider justice is when the government is catering to the needs of the people. People should control their government because without the people there will be no government. If there is a great percentage of citizens not getting enough supply from the government than the government is not doing their job. I do not believe that giving people what they need will inspire laziness because the average individual desires a lot more that just what they need. Voters don’t want to barely survive in a country; they want to have their needs met so that they can ensure their wants. As bad as the American economy is right now, it is hard for many people to find jobs. Should those people die and starve because of the economy’s lack of job opportunity? Does this mean that they are lazy? No, this is when the government should step in and help these people survive. People would not take advantage of the government aid if the directors were doing their job to ensure that everyone who needs it is getting it and not the people who do not.
When the word justice comes to mind I think of individuals receiving their just consequences. Justice in the United States is corrupt. There is no such thing is equality; therefore, justice cannot be served. Someone will always have the upper hand and decide whether or not you have been punished sufficiently. Justice can also be served in the lives of unfortunate individuals. What is just for the poor, mediocre, and the wealthy? Should poor get more benefits than the others? Well, I do not think that is very justly to give them praise and help if they do not want to help themselves. If I can wake up every morning with the courage to look for a job so can they. I work extremely hard to get what I need and want and if the poor are only poor for benefits then help is definitely not needed for them. Money is a necessity in America; you need it to survive; therefore, that should be motivation for people to get up and try. I also believe that the people who put forth more effort should receive more. Working strenuous jobs can become very agitating and the people who work them should be rewarded. People who are born into rich families do not know the meaning of hard-work. They are born rich which means they do not have to work for money for example, Paris Hilton. I think it is selfish, but who can help being born into a rich family. I believe that the parents should show their children more discipline for life. Justice will never be served fairly. It’s LIFE.
